“I Found a New Joy in Living, Thanks to Tribeca” Shankar Lal Dey, Tribeca Eldercare Member

senior citizen care in Kolkata

For Some, Life Begins at 80

When you listen to Mr. Dey, ‘Jethu’ to his Care Manager Prabir Paul from Tribeca Eldercare and the debonair and fun-loving Mr. Dey to all his friends who are fellow Members of Tribeca Eldercare – you forget that he is in his 80s. Here is a man who has lived well all his life as a highly respected Government Officer in Kolkata, raised a family and enjoyed the love and companionship of his wife. He has accepted with grace that nothing in life remains static and that the only way to live is to Live Well.

He talks about every human being going through different stages of life. Everyone faces retirement and loneliness some day. Children move away. Life partners pass on. For many, these milestones can mark the turning point for sliding into depression. But not for Mr. Dey. He has embraced his golden years of retirement with a ‘joie de vivre’ many would envy. And, he thanks Tribeca Eldercare for his confidence and peace of mind.

Making Friends. Living Life to the Full

For Mr. Dey, retirement has meant enjoying a well-deserved slower pace of life. But,  he has not let the world pass him by. He remarks a little wistfully that his wife, had she been alive, would have loved to make new friends with other like-minded Tribeca Members. Just as he has done. But unfortunately, that was not to be.

A naturally friendly and gregarious man, for Mr. Dey the opportunities created by Tribeca Eldercare to travel, meet people, socialise and stay engaged are a constant source of delight. Each new travel destination makes him ready with packed bags and a sparkle in his eye.

“I must have visited more places as a senior citizen than when I was so much younger. That is because Club Tribeca makes travel so easy and safe. Nothing to worry about, everything taken care of. This is Senior-Friendly Travel at its best.”

Travelling with Club Tribeca Senior Travel

Mr. Dey proudly details a long list of adventures:

  • The Ganga Cruise:The awe of passing under the Howrah Bridge on a launch, an experience he called “Apurba”
  • Festive Events: Events like Poila Boishakh (Bengali New Year) and the Ilish Utsav (Hilsa Festival).
  • Group Tours:Travel across India to destinations like Mandarmani, Varanasi, Kaziranga and Darjeeling.

The Darjeeling trip was a perfect example of the dedicated care he receives from Tribeca.  An accidental fall could have ruined the holiday and kept him confined in his room.  But with care and support, Mr. Dey took in many of the sights, never alone and always with a helping hand to guide him around. “They give me the courage and confidence to carry on,” says Mr. Dey with a smile.

Looking ahead, the travel itinerary is becoming even more exciting.  Club Tribeca’s Upcoming Trips to Shillong and Singapore/Malaysia beckon!

He shares a touching exchange with his son, who encourages his father’s adventures, “Baba – you just stay fit and go, we’ll take care of the rest.” Mr. Dey has become an unofficial ‘ambassador’ for SeniorTtravel, among friends of his age, encouraging them to remain active and embrace every opportunity to explore. “If I can do it, so can you. After all, there is Tribeca to look after you,” he tells them.

The Tribeca Way

Mr. Dey’s experiences with Tribeca Eldercare are a powerful testament to the value of human connection and how personalized support the Tribeca Way helps and supports seniors. His story challenges the conventional wisdom of aging and offers a ray of hope to the families who live abroad and worry about elderly parents living alone in Kolkata. With Tribeca Eldercare, they are no longer alone.

Learning to Derive Strength from Within

“It has been a life marked by responsibility and public service”. Mr. Dey   proudly recalls his roots in the village of Dakshin Gobindapur and his schooling at a century-old institution. His career in the Labour Department of the Government of West Bengal was challenging. It included a significant role overseeing the large cadre of doctors across 18 ESI Hospitals, handling their promotions and transfers. He retired as a Class One Gazetted Officer and continued his service as an Executive Officer for a local Municipality.

This background instilled in him discipline and resilience and an ability to manage complex situations—qualities that serve him well in later years. With his only son settled in the USA for his career—a decision Mr. Dey encouraged despite the distance, Mr. Dey found emotional support in the teachings of his Guru. This helped him cope with the loss of his wife and the void in his life with his son living far away.  He admits that the decision to become a member of Tribeca Eldercare, on the urgings of his son was a kind of turning point in his senior years.

Beyond Care: The Tribeca Family

It was the beginning of a new journey. This transformation is best captured in Mr. Dey’s words about his dedicated Care Manager, Prabir Paul. “Prabir is like a son to me,” he says with affection. Prabir, in turn, does not think that his duty as a Care Manager to look after Mr. Dey is a “duty”. This deep emotional investment is what makes all the difference. Prabir’s regular visits aren’t just check-ins; they are shared moments of conversation and laughter that successfully combat loneliness.

Prabir’s care and support covers both good times and bad. For example, Mr. Dey recalls how a nasty stomach ache one night brought Prabir rushing to his home with a doctor. Tribeca’s Emergency Response Services are activated with a single call. He is all praise for the Emergency Button, which can be activated even if he becomes incapacitated. This makes him feel completely safe and secure—a feeling he attributes to having Tribeca as his “pillar of support.”

New Challenges Await, New Horizons Beckon

These famous lines from Rabindranath Tagore’s dance drama Tasher Desh inspires people to break free from bonds of thoughts and physical impediments and break free. Because human beings have the capacity to re-discover and re-generate. We are unique in having this capability.

“Dear Mr. Shankar Lal Dey, keep inspiring Team Tribeca and all your friends that life is worth living every single day, at any age.

We are always there by your side, to help and support you.”
