Prevent social isolation and loneliness

“As people age, they often find themselves spending more time alone. Poor health, the death of a partner, caring for a loved one, and other situations that are more likely as people age can all lead to being socially isolated or feeling lonely.”

Too many elderly people find themselves feeling lonely after retirement when they have nothing to do. Children may live far away and visits and holidays cannot be managed frequently. Friends may slowly become incapacitated and unable to go out.

The world starts to shrink and with it, doors start to close on activities and taking interest in life. There is nowhere to go, so why bother with personal grooming or getting dressed? Why bother with eating, when it is the same mechanical routine every day? Many elderly people are often alone as well as lonely. The two are not exactly the same things.

The Difference between Being Alone and Feeling Lonely

“Alone” describes a physical state of being by yourself, while “lonely” describes the negative emotional feeling of being disconnected or isolated. You can be alone, accept your condition and live with it – making time for activities and hobbies, friends and outings.

“Loneliness” or “Feeling Lonely” is more complex and something no one really likes. It is an unwanted feeling of lacking connection. Loneliness is often the result of being alone and without friends and emotional connectivity with other people.”

Social Isolation

Social isolation is not having social connections. This leads to being alone. Elders face social isolation when they stop being active and unable to go out and socialise. According to research by the Centers for Disease Control in the United States of America, 1 in 4 adults lack emotional and social support. The situation is better in India where there is still a smaller number of children who live away from parents and therefore, social isolation is lessened. But jobs in different cities and even in different countries are now the norm in India as well and this is leading to increasing levels of loneliness and social isolation amongst elders.
